The main reason for the famine in the state is the uncertainty and inadequacy of rainfall.  The various reasons responsible for the famine can be understood as follows:-

Natural causes- 

• dry climate 
• high temperature 
• inadequacy and irregularity of rainfall
• lack of forest 
• infertile soil
• lack of rivers

Human causes -

• Uncontrolled and irrational deforestation 
• Indiscriminate exploitation of ground water 
• Ecological imbalance

Economic reasons: 

• Traditionally weak economy based on agriculture 
• Backward condition of animal husbandry 
• Decline of traditional cottage and village industries 
• Increasing burden of unproductive population 
• Irrigation  Lack of means
